The premise of acupuncture is based on the concept that there is a communication between specific points under the skin and all of the organs, glands and tissues within the body. This communication is very similar to how the brain and nerves transmit signals within the body through the nervous system. By stimulating specific points the condition or injury can be treated as well as even reversed bringing the patient back to health and regaining function. The initial approach of acupuncture is intended to evaluate the entire body as a whole and to not separate the body and mind, but by incorporating Western philosophies this approach may vary and be condition or symptom specific. The acupuncture points may be stimulated by several different methods including needling, non-penetrating needles, electrical instruments, magnets and even the fingertips just to name a few. Whichever method the patient is most comfortable with is the method utilized by the doctor. Conditions that are most commonly treated with acupuncture (but are not limited to) are pain, stress, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, infertility, inflammation, symptoms associated with allergies as well as headaches, just to name a few.
